3/2/2024 0 Comments Why Its Important I was very drawn to write about this topic. It is always a great idea to be educated in the past. Especially in women's history. It's such an important part of our past. it's a beautiful story of how we as women demanded respect and wouldn't back down until we were heard. The past is important because it stops the future from making mistakes. We can make sure that history doesn't repeat itself. the great women who fought in the past worked hard and dedicated their lives to this cause. We should respect that and maintain their legacy. It reminds us that we can't stop fighting for what we want/want to maintain. Especially in these times, we need to fight for our rights and remember the women of the past who have. I still think there is more to learn about the change and history of women in society. It so interesting to see how many things have changed throughout the decades. Women of today have more rights and freedom now than women in the past centuries could even dream of. Women went from being property of men, barely considered a citizen to now being able to be independent on our own and have our own property, finance's and most importantly rights. Looking into the past can give a bigger and more understanding view point of what exactly women have gone through, which I think is so important. I will continue to research the past and it's traditions. I hope that knowing our history and culture will help us predict and improve the future. this is important enough a reason to research this alone. 2/21/2024 0 Comments Women Today Women today have a lot more freedom then they did in the 1800's. We can have property, our assets are our own, we are not considered objects. Our roles in society have changed. In the 19th century women roles started to shift into something different. Instead of being a house wife, a mother, and submissive towards their husbands they began to get into the workforce and demand to be respected as an equal. This is when society shifted and began to question there view points on women. As new opportunities opened in education, politics, and jobs people advanced and paved new roles of society for generations to come. Voting TimelineNot every country's story is the same. Some places took longer to change the ways of society. France: - Women were able to vote in 1946 -for a long period they were seen as "passive citizens" - Now France advocates for women to go to school, work, own properties, and live independently. They also aim for women to be a peace in their country. Russia: - Women were able to vote in 1917 - Women were able to hold property unlike most western countries during that time period. - Now women have the same rights as men. Everything is equal. The New struggle for Women Women have definitely come along way but with this change in society comes new problems. Although women can work and "do it all" sometimes they take on to much. Women are expected to work, keep the house clean, cook for a family, do the household chore's and more. For a average mom this can be frustrating. Picture wanting to relax at home after a long day at work only to realize you have to clean the house, flip the laundry, and make your family dinner. This can be challenging. But this is during a time period were both parents have to work to normally afford to live. It will be interesting to see if these kinds of expectations will be pushed in the future. If and when we ever as a nation get to a good standing where the average households can survive on one income comfortably will women revert back to being a house wife but with more rights or will the majority of men stand up and take on the responsibility of the house. In some households this is already happening. One in five stay at home parents are the father figures in the house. It is said that in today's society 18% of men are stay at home days. Looking at the 1989 percentage which was 11%, I would say that the trend of stay at home dads is becoming increasingly popular and their is a good chance it will only grow as time goes on. Originally women had very few rights, Women were objects that men would possess and do with as they please. For example, in the 1800's women were not allowed to own property. Any money they made was viewed as there husbands and if there husband died for some reason they then were the responsibility of the next male in their family. But as time moves women have been able to make their mark in the world. This started with the women's suffrage movement in the 1820's. Tons of reform groups started to pop up during this time across the U.S . Many women during this time were hesitant to join the cause. The way of life they were living was all they ever knew and it seemed ridiculous at the time to think that it would ever be different. The cause was able to be recognized at a national level in 1884. In July of 1884, reformers Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott organized the first women’s rights convention at Seneca Falls, New York (this is where Elizabeth Stanton lived). More than 300 people, mostly women, but also some men, including a former African American slave and activist Frederick Douglass, attended. during this a group of delegates created what we call the "Declaration of Sentiments". This was inspired by the declaration of independence. it reads as follows, "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men and women are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” What the women were trying to portray is that they should have the right to vote just like any other citizen of the United States. This had some push back and was mocked in the beginning. With many historical events in-between women were finally allowed to vote 72 years on August 18th,1920 later after the convention in New York. Of the 260 women that had originally attended the convention only one was alive to vote at that time. Her name was Charlotte Woodward and she was able to happily cast her vote that day. Since then women have strived to be given all equal rights in the United States. We have made such a big impact on this nation. We have women like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Stanton to thank for starting the movement that allows women to have rights in today's society. AnthonySusan B. Anthony was born on February 15th, 1820. Susan B. Anthony, an American social reformer and women's rights activist, played a key role in the suffrage movement. During her life she Elizabeth Cady Stanton in 1851, she would become a lifelong friend of hers who became an advocate for women's rights and worked with her on social reform. After Anthony was prevented from speaking at the temperance conference because she was a woman, they founded the New York Women's State Temperance Society. She dedicated her whole life to the women rights movement. Her efforts don't go unnoticed and are acknowledged and praised today.
